Beginner Drawing Tips: Draw from your Shoulder

Image
Don't Draw from your Wrists...

Don't Draw from your Elbow...

Learn to Draw from your Shoulder!

Another tidbit of advice that often pops up from experienced artists is to learn how to draw from your shoulder. Essentially, you should lock your wrist and your elbow and only pivot from your shoulder. It's not as easy to learn because the motion that we've learned early on since we were little was to write strokes from pen to paper with our wrists. We have to unlearn this for drawing and instead lock our wrist and elbow and just use our shoulder to pivot.

Drawing from your wrist gives you a lot of control but has a very limited range of movement. Drawing from your shoulder gives you a massive range of motion and it excels at drawing long lines that flow smoothly.

Beginner Drawing Tips: Periodically Flip your Drawing Horizontally

Image
Upon watching dozens of YouTube videos on Drawing Tips for Beginners, a common tip that was frequently shared by artists is to periodically flip your drawings horizontally. At first, I really didn't understand the value of this action and dismissed it as something that wasn't as useful but boy was I wrong. Upon starting to try to draw characters or human figures which often required symmetry or a certain balance of proportions, it really does help to change your perspective from time to time by flipping your drawings horizontally. I often find that my drawings tend to be imbalanced and I wouldn't really be aware of the issue unless I flip my drawing. A good drawing should look good even when flipped or inverted. So if you haven't already, try to periodically flip your drawings horizontally and be surprised as I was on how effective and helpful this tip is.
Of course, this tip applies mainly to digital drawings. I assume it would be harder for artists who draw on tradi…

Great Beginner Drawing Resource: drawabox.com

Image
I've found a great resource for beginner artists and those wanting to learn how to draw in general, such as my self: drawabox.com

It's a free learning resource which teaches drawing from a logical approach rather than what the author calls "the fine art approach." The author describes learning to draw as something like a skill that tries to break a specific drawing down into simpler problems that can be individually solved and when is done produces the desired outcome.

It is lauded by many as one of the best free drawing course online today. So if you're a beginner like me wanting to learn how to draw, be sure to visit drawabox.com.
